AN INTRODUCTION TO CARTING
Using a dog as a beast of burden may sound strange, but in reality man has been using dogs for this purpose for quite some time.
From Native American use of the dog and travois, to the use of Sennenhunds (Swiss mountain dogs such as the Bernese Mountain Dog and Greater Swiss
Mountain Dog) to haul milk from the farm to the creamery, and of course the Inuit use of sled dogs.
The history of carting (also known as draft dog) is fascinating in itself.
WHY CART WITH YOUR DOG
Carting with your dog is fun...its good exercise for both you and your dog and it gives your dog a job. When you start carting
you will notice...just watch...how your dog's attitude changes while carting and while in harness. Your dog knows something is
quite different from the norm and seems to be thinking "whatever this is all about it must be important".
Carting also builds great practical obedience and forms an esprit de corps between your and your dog. I will not claim
that carting is unique in this way, but just like the relationship between a gun dog and hunter, carting bonds a man (or a woman) and his dog.
