WORKING WITH THE TRACES
First off, recall that the traces are the long nylon or leather straps that physically connect the dog in harness to the cart.
There is one on each side of the dog, connected from the traces D-ring to the single tree. We will talk more about the single tree later
as we will not be using a single tree in this exercise.
This exercise requires two people and one dog! To begin:
- Harness your dog and check for proper positioning of the harness.
- Once that is done connect one end of each trace strap to a trace D-ring.
- Next, connect the snaps on the free ends of each trace to each other. This will form a "V" shape with you holding the connected traces at the bottom of the "V"
- One person will need to walk your dog at heel on lead. The other person will carry the traces behind the dog and apply slight resistance while the dog is moving.
- Do not let the traces dangle on the ground yet.
- Move the dog forward at heel and if he seems bothered or concerned by the new sensation (something is pulling him backward) simply reassure him that he is a very good dog and all is OK.
- Once he is comfortable with the moving straight forward with the traces, add a few turns so he can experience a new sensation... that is something will be pulling backward but it won't feel even on his left and right side.
- Again, reassure him (or her) that this is normal and he is doing well.
- Continue this exercise until you are certain your dog is familiar with these sensations.
- Now change roles with your assistant and do it again.
