THE HARNESS

To help make carting enjoyable for your dog it is important that you use a harness that 1) is in good repair and 2) fits your dog well. Before we can determine fit however, we need to get the harness on the dog.

The first step is to remove the traces, front cinch, and back cinch from the harness. What you have left is a much simplified harness which eliminates the tangling and frustration that is otherwise quite common. Lay the harness on the floor as shown in the photo below.

Notice the D-ring and left/right straps

Find the D-ring. When fitted on your dog, this D-ring will be located just below the top of the sternum, where the neck meets the chest. Pick up the harness by the D-ring and give it a shake. Next, use your free hand to feel the harness and pay particular attention to its padding. Remove any grass, seeds, burrs, etc. that you find and un-twist any straps that have become twisted since you last used the harness. This is a good habit to get into as this shake and inspection will help ensure your dog's comfort while wearing the harness.

Next, gather the harness into your hands as shown below.

Gather the harness in your hands bundling the left and right straps beneath the neck pads as shown

Now, call your dog to you and instruct him to stand. Facing your dog, place the harness over his neck and lay out the left and right side straps for the next step.

Next, kneel on one knee and give your dog the command "paw". Your dog will almost certainly not know what this means, so help him learn. Here's how:

  1. Start with your dog's left paw (since you are facing your dog, this will be the paw on your right
  2. Reach through hole A of the harness
  3. Give the command "paw" and simultaneously grasp the leg just above the paw and lift it upward and toward you. Note: if your dog is bearing weight upon this paw you may need to pause until he shift his weight off the paw. To help him, you can move the paw forward which will force the weight onto the other paw.
  4. With your dog's paw in your hand and a comfortable distance above the ground, simply slide the paw through part A of the harness.
  5. Repeat with the other paw (now, surely some smarty-pants is going to take this "repeat business" literally and end up with two paws through the same hole. Let me remind you to use your common sense too).
When this step is done correctly, your dog-in-harness will look like the one pictured below. We are not done though, so click next to finish up.
